Anthropogenic Eutrophication Drives Major Food Web Changes in Mwanza Gulf, Lake Victoria

AbstractDiscerning ecosystem change and food web dynamics underlying anthropogenic eutrophication and the introduction of non-native species is necessary for ensuring the long-term sustainability of fisheries and lake biodiversity. Previous studies of eutrophication in Lake Victoria, eastern Africa, have focused on the loss of endemic fish biodiversity over the past several decades, but changes in the plankton communities over this same time remain unclear. To fill this gap, we examined sediment cores from a eutrophic embayment, Mwanza Gulf, to determine the timing and magnitude of changes in the phytoplankton and zooplankton assemblages over the past century. Biogeochemical proxies indicate nutrient enrichment began around ~ 1920 CE and led to rapid increases in primary production, and our analysis of photosynthetic pigments revealed three zones: pre-eutrophication (prior to 1920 CE), onset of eutrophication with increases in all pigments (1920–1990 CE), and sustained eutrophication with cyanobacterial dominance (1990 CE–present). Cladoceran remains indicate an abrupt decline in biomass in ~ 1960 CE, in response to the cumulative effects of eutrophication and lake-level rise, preceding the collapse of haplochromine cichlids in the 1980s. Alona and Chydorus, typically benthic littoral taxa, have remained at relatively low abundances since the 1960s, whereas the abundance of Bosmina, typically a planktonic taxon, increased in the 1990s concurrently with the biomass recovery of haplochromine cichlid fishes. Overall, our results demonstrate substantial changes over the past century in the biomass structure and taxonomic composition of Mwanza Gulf phytoplankton and zooplankton communities, providing a historical food web perspective that can help understand the recent changes and inform future resource management decisions in the Lake Victoria ecosystem.

Zooplankton community structure and diel migration patterns vary over hours, days, and years in the pelagic and littoral zone of a eutrophic reservoir

Abstract Zooplankton play an integral role as indicators of water quality in freshwater ecosystems, but exhibit substantial variability in their density and community composition over space and time. This variability in zooplankton community structure may be driven by multiple factors, including taxon-specific migration behavior in response to environmental conditions. Many studies have highlighted substantial variability in zooplankton communities across spatial and temporal scales, but the relative importance of space vs. time in structuring zooplankton community dynamics is less understood. In this study, we quantified spatial (a littoral vs. a pelagic site) and temporal (hours to years) variability in zooplankton community structure in a eutrophic reservoir in southwestern Virginia, USA. We found that zooplankton community structure was more variable among sampling dates over 3 years than among sites or hours of the day, which was associated with differences in water temperature, chlorophyll a, and nutrient concentrations. Additionally, we observed high variability in zooplankton migration behavior, though a slightly greater magnitude of DHM vs. DVM during each sampling date, likely due to changing environmental conditions. Ultimately, our work underscores the need to continually integrate spatial and temporal monitoring to understand patterns of zooplankton community structure and behavior in freshwater ecosystems.

Temporal and vertical variations in carbon flux and export of zooplankton fecal pellets in the western South China Sea

The enhancement of particulate organic carbon transfer to the deep sea by zooplankton fecal pellets constitutes a crucial component of the marine biological carbon pump. Here, we investigated time-series variations in characteristic and flux of zooplankton fecal pellets at different water depths of two sediment-trap mooring stations from May 2021 to May 2022 in the western South China Sea. The results show that numerical fluxes of fecal pellets were 0.75 ± 0.60 × 104, 0.63 ± 0.63 × 104, and 0.38 ± 0.29 × 104 pellets m−2 d−1 at 500 m, 1170 m, and 1380 m water depth, respectively, corresponding to their carbon fluxes of 0.10 ± 0.06, 0.09 ± 0.04, and 0.10 ± 0.04 mg C m−2 d−1. Both numerical and carbon fluxes of fecal pellets exhibited clear seasonal variations, with two peaks occurred in August and early November at all water depths. The fecal pellets have distinct morphological types (spherical, cylindrical, and ellipsoidal) and their contributions to the numerical and carbon fluxes were different. At all water depths, ellipsoidal and spherical pellets accounted for 96.0% of the numerical flux and 72.1% of the carbon flux. Cylindrical pellets were rare in quantity, accounting for 4.0% of numerical flux, but their carbon contribution accounted for 27.9% of the total fecal pellet carbon flux. The proportional fractions of zooplankton fecal pellets contributed to the overall particulate organic carbon from 0.7% to 28.2% in the western South China Sea, and fell in a reasonable range around the world. Multiple mechanisms, including East Asian monsoon climate and zooplankton community structure may be responsible for the production and fate of fecal pellets as well as their contribution to the settling particulate organic carbon.

We analyzed the results of studies of 176 different types of lakes in the Middle Volga region (Russia). The impact of various environmental factors (morphometric parameters of lakes, physical and chemical indicators of water) on the lakes’ zooplankton communities of two landscape-geographical zones (forest and forest-steppe) was studied. The aim of the work was to identify the biodiversity of pelagic zooplankton and to assess the role of environmental factors in the development of zooplankton communities. Statistical studies included the calculation of the Spearman and Pearson correlation coefficients, data analysis using linear and logistic regression methods. We identify 230 species of zooplankton, including Rotifera – 107 (45.6%), Cladocera – 76 (33.6%), Copepoda – 47 (20.8%). Forest lakes show more species in the sample and higher quantitative indices compared to the forest-steppe lakes. The values of these indicators are determined by a complex of factors, the most important of which are the morphometric parameters of the lakes, the content of mineral nitrogen, oxygen, water mineralization and its determining ions. The depth of the reservoir can increase in the number of species in the sample or decrease them. Zooplankton quantification decreases as maximum depth increases. In deep-water lakes they are usually lower than in wellwarmed high-trophic and shallow ones. High mineralization and higher content of nutrients reduce the number of species in the sample and quantitative indicators of zooplankton. The increase in mineral nitrogen concentration and average ranking index is negatively related to zooplankton abundance, which is due to the occurrence of negative effects associated with anthropogenic eutrophication. Local conditions determine the composition and structure of zooplankton communities within the landscape-climatic zones, which determine the ionic composition of water and the concentration of major ions.

Joint seasonal dynamics of phytoplankton and zooplankton in the sub-Arctic White Sea

The seasonal succession of phytoplankton species composition and biomass plays a pivotal role in driving the seasonal variations in zooplankton community structure and biomass. Our study focused on the seasonal dynamics of planktonic communities in the Chupa Inlet (Kandalaksha Bay, White Sea) to determine if there are distinct complexes of phyto- and mesozooplankton species associated with different seasons, and whether these complexes are interconnected. Four seasonal groups of phyto- and zooplankton samples were revealed, each characterized by a specific composition of typical species. The winter and spring groups of phytoplankton and zooplankton corresponded to each other in their temporal span. Later in the year, this temporal correspondence was disrupted as early copepodite stages of Calanus glacialis dominated the community briefly in late spring, forming the basis of a separate seasonal group. From July until the end of the study period, warmer-water species constituted the community core, shaping the summer-autumn seasonal group. The role of smaller species in both phyto- and zooplankton communities increased during summer and autumn. The size structure and motility of the phytoplankton were found to significantly influence the seasonal succession of the zooplankton. This apparently contributes to better trophic coupling between phyto- and zooplankton throughout the seasonal cycle.

Biofloc supplementation improves growth performances, nutrient utilization, and histological status of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) while enhancing zooplankton diversity, community, and abundance

The present work investigates the effect of biofloc supplementation, as an environmentally clean aqua-feed technique, on water quality, growth performance, feed utilization, and histological status of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). Moreover, indicators of zooplankton diversity, community structure, abundance, similarities, and cluster analysis were studied during the experiment. A 60-day growth experiment based on biofloc supplementation was performed to evaluate, in addition to the control group (BF0), the effects of five groups of biofloc supplementation (BF1 = 14.20, BF2 = 28.40, BF3 = 42.60, BF4 = 56.80, and BF5 = 71.0 g L−1, respectively) on Nile tilapia juveniles (initial body weight: 13.30 ± 0.01 g fish−1). During the 15 days of acclimation, the juveniles in all groups were fed twice daily on the same control diet (a commercial diet containing 28% protein). Then, the juveniles were randomly distributed to 18 tanks (each 0.5 m3 with a stocking of 40 fish/tank). The feed rate was 3% of the total fish biomass, adjusted weekly. The water quality indicators were in the ideal range recommended for Nile tilapia culture. The results found that the highest weight gain, specific growth rate and survival rate, and the lowest feed conversion ratio of fish were reported in the BF5 group. Moreover, this group achieved the highest zooplankton abundance (20,706 Ind. L−1) compared to the control group (457 Ind. L−1). The results showed that sections of the muscles in the control group (BF0) revealed fibers arranged into bundles. Comparisons between the muscles in the control group (BF0) and the bioflocs groups (BF1–BF5) showed unclear differences. However, sections of the muscle group BF1 showed increased splitting of muscle fibers and the separation of individual muscle fibers into smaller units. The liver showed multiple pathological lesions in all experimental groups (BF0–BF5). Zooplankton diversity indicators and cluster analysis data also reported a significant difference between the control group (BF0) and the biofloc groups, especially the BF5 group. The present study concluded that the addition of biofloc (71 g L−1) to culture ponds significantly improves the growth, feed utilization, and survival rates of Nile tilapia while enhancing zooplankton diversity, community, and abundance.

Progression along the invasion curve: silver carp growth slows temporally in two Missouri River tributaries

Silver carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix Valenciennes, 1844) have been invading North American rivers for decades, often altering zooplankton community structure and impacting native fishes. Silver carp invaded eastern South Dakota tributaries of the Missouri River in the early 2000s. Changes in dynamic rate functions can occur as invasive populations move to the latter stages of the invasion curve, but direct temporal assessments of silver carp populations are limited. Our objectives were to compare current growth of silver carp 1) between the Big Sioux and James rivers in South Dakota and 2) with previous growth recorded from the early stages of invasion (2009–2012) in these rivers. We collected silver carp in May and June of 2020–2022 using boat electrofishing and cast netting. We extracted lapilli otoliths for consensus aging from 99 and 82 silver carp from the Big Sioux and James rivers, respectively. We evaluated growth for each population using Bayesian von Bertalanffy models and compared posterior mean length at ages 2–5 to determine the probabilities of differences between rivers and with estimates from the introduction stage. Posterior estimated mean L∞ values were similar between the Big Sioux (714 mm) and James rivers (709 mm); however, the probability that the posterior mean K estimate was greater for silver carp in the James River (0.271) than the Big Sioux River (0.248) was >99.9%. Estimated mean lengths at age 2 were larger in the Big Sioux and James samples than during the introduction stage, but mean lengths at ages 3–5 were smaller. Changes in growth characteristics indicate that growth has slowed in the current establishment stage of invasion from the earlier introduction stage.

Comparison of the zooplankton-based RCC to Carlson’s trophic state indices and water quality parameters

Zooplankton is not included as a biological quality element, even though it is a key component of pelagic food webs. The data on zooplankton community structure can be used to evaluate the trophic state of lakes through an RCC Index, based on quantitative proportions between the main zooplankton groups. As previous investigations have related the index only to the Secchi disc transparency, the aim of this study was to compare the Index to a set of water quality parameters and trophic state indices. Two sandpit lakes with contrasting characteristics were selected as model lakes for the study. A total of 57 samples were collected simultaneously with the physicochemical water quality parameters between 2016 and 2020. Carlson’s trophic state indices were used to assess the trophic state of the lakes. Pearson correlation coefficient and Principal Component Analysis were used to assess the observed correlations between the measured parameters and to distinguish what factors regulate zooplankton community structure. Overall, 86 zooplankton taxa were identified. RCC Index ranged from 2 in the small sandpit lake to 87 in the big sandpit lake. A highly significant negative correlation was found between the RCC Index and the values of TP and COD. The results complement the arguments for the inclusion of zooplankton as a BQE for the assessment of the status of lakes.

The role of fish predators and their foraging traits in shaping zooplankton community structure.

Differentiation of foraging traits among predator populations may help explain observed variation in the structure of prey communities. However, few studies have investigated the phenotypic effects of predators on their prey in natural communities. Here, we use a comparative analysis of 78 Greenlandic lakes to examine how foraging trait variation among threespine stickleback populations can help explain variation in zooplankton community composition among lakes. We find that landscape-scale variation in zooplankton composition was jointly explained by lake properties, such as size and water chemistry, and the presence and absence of both stickleback and arctic char. Additional variation in zooplankton community structure can be explained by stickleback jaw protrusion, a trait with known utility for foraging on zooplankton, but only in lakes where stickleback co-occur with arctic char. Overall, our results illustrate how trait variation of predators, alongside other ecosystem properties, can influence the composition of prey communities in nature.

Composition, Distribution, and Biodiversity of Zooplanktons in Tropical Lentic Ecosystems with Different Environmental Conditions

A study was conducted to evaluate zooplankton species composition, abundance, and diversity in both natural and artificial lakes with varying trophic levels and to determine the relationship between zooplankton community structure and lake environmental conditions. This study hypothesized that correlations exist between zooplankton community structures and environmental parameters associated with eutrophication in natural and artificial lakes. Sampling was conducted across 16 distinct freshwater lentic ecosystems in Malaysia, including natural lakes/swamps, reservoirs, constructed lakes/ponds, and old mining lakes, spanning a range of trophic levels from mesotrophic to hypereutrophic conditions. Physicochemical parameters were measured in situ, while water and zooplankton samples were collected for nutrient analyses, as well as for zooplankton identification and enumeration. Throughout this study, a total of 58 zooplankton species, consisting of 36 species of rotifers, 12 species of cladocerans, and 10 species of copepods, were recorded. The highest zooplankton density (365.7 ± 13.7 ind L−1) was recorded in constructed lakes/ponds while the lowest density was recorded in natural shallow lakes/swamps (200.5 ± 25.5 ind L−1). On the other hand, significantly higher (p < 0.05) mean species diversity was observed in natural lakes/swamps (H’ = 2.2 ± 0.0); whereas, the lowest diversity was in old mining lakes (H’ = 1.5 ± 0.1). The canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) scores indicated that Polyarthra vulgaris and Chydorus ventricosus were the discriminating species in natural shallow lakes/swamps associated with high water transparency. Meanwhile, the small-sized cladocerans (Ceriodaphnia cornuta) and rotifers (Keratella spp., Brachionus spp., and Trichocerca spp.) were the most discriminating species in lakes with high turbidity, nutrients, and chlorophyll a concentrations, which are the main features of reservoirs and constructed lakes/ponds. Low density and diversity in old mining lakes were due to a low species number and the dominance of two species, Lophocharis curvata (38.8%) and Ptygura libera (39.7%). Overall, the high dominance of a specific zooplankton species resulted in lower biodiversity in artificial ecosystems compared to natural ecosystems. This study elucidated that zooplankton community structure in lakes was significantly influenced by the environmental conditions related to the lake trophic status.

Zooplankton studies warn abnormal protrusions on the copepods from coastal environments under anthropic impacts

Faced with a global scenario where the etiology of abnormal tissue protrusions in copepods and their ecological consequences are unclear, it is crucial to seek a better understanding about these abnormalities. In this study, supported by images confocal laser microscope, scanning electron microscopy and histological analysis, the levels and distribution of morphological abnormalities in copepods were analysed. The analysis of zooplankton samples from Todos-os-Santos Bay showed the occurrence of two types of abnormalities on the body surfaces of copepods. The images clearly showed that the abnormalities in the prosome were formed between the somites from a rupture of the intersomatic membrane, causing a process of herniation of the internal tissues, with part of the digestive tract projected outside the body. Abnormalities in the urosome observed by scanning electron microscopy showed continuity of the copepod intestine, forming a rectal prolapse. Overall, this study highlights a significant reduction in indices of zooplankton community structure and abnormal tissue protrusions, evidencing a pathological condition in copepods from coastal environments under anthropic impacts.

Distribution pattern of zooplankton assemblages in the eutrophic Hangzhou Bay, China

To reveal the distribution pattern of the zooplankton community in the typical eutrophic Hangzhou Bay in the northern East China Sea, we investigated the zooplankton community. The study was conducted in 2019 during the summer. A total of 57 species of zooplankton belonging to 6 phyla and 52 genera were identified. During the sampling period, the abundance of zooplankton in Hangzhou Bay was 26.7–497.2 ind/m3, with an average of 179.58 ind/m3. The abundance of zooplankton increased from west to east, and the abundance of zooplankton in most waters of the offshore area was higher than that in the coastal waters of Hangzhou Bay. The top dominant species, Tortanus vermiculus, was distributed in Hangzhou Bay, whereas Paracalanus aculeatus was mainly distributed in the mouth of Hangzhou Bay, and Acartia (Odontacartia) spinicauda and Centropages dorsispinatus were distributed between Zhoushan Island and Hangzhou Bay. The spatial distribution of the ShannonWiener index and evenness index of the zooplankton in Hangzhou Bay and its adjacent waters showed that the community structure of zooplankton was stable in the estuary of Hangzhou Bay and eastern part of the Zhoushan Islands. In addition to salinity and water temperature, eutrophication-related water quality parameters were also crucial to zooplankton species number, Margalef species richness and the abundance of the dominant species Tortanus vermiculus. The zooplankton dominant species and community composition were affected or restructured by eutrophication-related factors, especially for phosphate (PO4), nitrate nitrogen (NO3), dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) and the eutrophic index (EI).

Can habitat enhancement limit the ecological impacts of predatory fish stocking? An experimental approach

Fish stocking is a ubiquitous management measure in freshwater fisheries but it can induce important ecological impacts on communities and recipient ecosystems. Habitat enhancement might limit the ecological impacts of fish stocking by directly supporting biodiversity and helping to maintain ecosystem functioning. In the present, we used a mesocosm experiment to assess whether habitat enhancement, through the addition of coarse woody habitat (CWH) in the form of thin branches bundled or within an iron cage, can limit the impact of stocking of a predatory fish, juvenile largemouth bass Micropterus nigricans, on prey communities and ecosystem functioning. Results demonstrated that, prior to stocking, there was overall no significant effect of habitat enhancement on zooplankton communities and a strong effect on benthic macroinvertebrate communities that was associated with a decrease in the decomposition rate of organic matter in mesocosms containing caged-CWH. We also found that the stocking of juvenile largemouth bass significantly affected the structure of zooplankton communities while we did not observe significant effects on macroinvertebrate communities and ecosystem functioning. This effect on zooplankton community structure was compensated by habitat enhancement, notably when using caged-CWH. This study showed that habitat enhancement alone may not be sufficient to compensate the potential effects of predatory fish stocking, and that the choice of materials used to enhance habitats is fundamental in driving the efficiency.

Factors associated with Paddlefish (Polyodon spathula) restoration success in Oklahoma

AbstractThe Paddlefish (Polyodon spathula) has been extirpated from portions of its native range due to anthropogenic habitat degradation and fragmentation, most notably the impoundment of rivers. To mitigate some of these losses in Oklahoma, Paddlefish have been stocked into reservoirs throughout the state, with variable success in establishing self‐sustaining populations. Two factors thought to contribute to success of Paddlefish stocking are spawning substrate and prey availability, which were quantified in six reservoirs and nine reservoir tributaries. Side‐scan sonar and supervised classification of aerial imagery were used to classify 4517‐ha of river substrate upstream of the river‐reservoir interface in reservoir tributaries. Zooplankton community structure, water clarity, and nutrient availability were also assessed in the same reservoirs and tributaries. One tributary had suitable spawning substrate (>40%), and the rest had minimal (<1.5%), which suggested that availability of suitable spawning substrate was not directly correlated with Paddlefish stocking success. Reservoirs with self‐sustaining Paddlefish populations had higher abundance of large zooplankton (copepods and cladocerans) than reservoirs without a reproducing population. Notably, tributaries associated with Lake Texoma, the one known example of failed restoration, were much more turbid than other rivers. We conclude that abiotic factors such as water clarity may contribute more to variable recruitment than spawning substrate or zooplankton abundance by mediating foraging success of Paddlefish post‐larvae.

Decadal comparisons identify the drivers of persistent changes in the zooplankton community structure in the northwest Atlantic

Abstract Plankton community structure changes seasonally in response to the annual cycles of stratification, temperature, and primary productivity. These communities also change from year-to-year, in some cases exhibiting persistent regime shifts. How changes in physical conditions structure the plankton community and why conditions persist is a fundamental question in oceanography. Continuous plankton recorders have been used to sample the plankton community across the Gulf of Maine since 1961. Historically, this community has had a classic subarctic structure dominated by Calanus finmarchicus. However, during the 1990s, C. finmarchicus became less prominent, and a more diverse community of smaller copepods emerged. This shift was related to an influx of cold, low-salinity water. We show that a similar community shift occurred around 2012. We use high-resolution hydrographic data to link the shift to an influx of saltier water and warmer conditions. By comparing the 1990s with the recent decade, we develop a synthesis for how physical changes lead to community shifts. Our synthesis suggests that the link between the 1990s and 2010s is enhanced water column stratification. We further propose that ecological interactions link declines in C. finmarchicus with the emergence of the more diverse community, drawing parallels with classic food web ecology.

Structure and Trophic Characteristics of Zooplankton Communities of the East Siberian Sea

Research on the structure and trophic characteristics of zooplankton communities of the East Siberian Sea (ESS) was performed within the program “Marine Ecosystems of the Siberian Arctic” during cruise 69 of the R/V Akademik Mstislav Keldysh. The material was collected on two quasimeridional transects conducted in the latitudinal range ~71°00′–75°30′ N from the inner shelf adjacent to the Indigirka and Kolyma outfalls to the outer shelf during September 5–9, 2017. The list of species and larger taxa, as well as their biomass and trophic characteristics, are presented, and the peculiarities of cross-shelf distribution in relation to the conditions of the pelagic environment are described. The obtained estimates of the mezoplankton biomass in the ESS are on the whole within the range typical of the rest of the Siberian Seas in summer–fall. It has been established that mezoplankton communities of the western and eastern ESS significantly differ in quantitative characteristics, the role of dominant species and taxonomic groups in biomass, grazing impact of mesoplankton on the phytoplankton biomass and production, and features of the cross-shelf distribution of these characteristics. The boundary between the communities with different structural functional characteristics is located approximately at 160°–163° E. A conclusion is made that analysis of climatic and seasonal changes in ESS mezoplankton should be examined with allowance for the principal differences between pelagic biotopes and communities of the western and eastern parts of the basin.

Structural characteristics of zooplankton communities in Hongze Lake driven by water environmental factors from 2016 to 2020.

This study investigated zooplankton species, density, biomass, and water physicochemical factors in Hongze Lake between 2016 and 2020. The correlation between zooplankton community changes and physicochemical factors was explored using canonical correspondence analysis and Spearman correlation analysis. The investigation found 48 species of protozoa, 52 species of rotifers, 36 species of cladocera, and 32 species of copepoda. The yearly mean density fluctuated between 529.01 and 2234.51 individuals per liter. The yearly mean zooplankton biomass was 950.14 mg/L, ranging from 271.92 to 1365.835 mg/L. A high diversity of zooplankton was found in the Overwater Area, with a large proportion of protozoa and copepoda. Correlation analysis revealed that nitrogen content, pH, water temperature, chemical oxygen demand, biochemical oxygen demand, water transparency, and chlorophyll a were important factors influencing the distribution of zooplankton in Hongze Lake. These factors collectively contributed to the evolution of the zooplankton community structure in Hongze Lake.

Turnover of phytoplankton and zooplankton communities driven by human-induced disturbances and climate changes in a small urban coastal wetland

Urbanization causes immense eutrophication pressure on small urban wetlands, which play a vital role in urban ecosystems. However, our comprehension of the prolonged impacts of eutrophication on these types of wetlands continues to be significantly limited. To address this knowledge gap, we analyzed monthly physical–chemical variables and seasonal phytoplankton and zooplankton communities at the Taipa-Coloane wetland in Macau, China, from 2013 to 2019. Through the generalized additive model (GAM) and principal component analysis (PCA), we found that the aquatic system mainly exhibited interannual variations instead of seasonal variations, with nutrient loads and river discharge (turbidity and salinity) being the most prominent features affected by anthropogenic activities and climate change. Over the years, the increasing turbidity and phytoplankton showed that bottom-up effects predominated the aquatic systems. Under the bottom-up effects of eutrophication and turbidity, the phytoplankton communities showed high adaptation that MP and S1 occupied more dominance after 2016, with higher abundance but lower diversity. Moreover, the bottom-up effects further affected the structure of zooplankton communities. The dominance of rotifers filter feeders (RF) decreased over the years while middle copepods and cladocerans filter feeders (MCF) increased, implying a trend of zooplankton toward large size over time. Overall, our result reveals the bottom-up control pattern in the aquatic systems of small urban wetlands. This research provides valuable insights into the dynamics and responses of plankton communities to environmental changes in small urban wetlands, providing valuable information for future conservation efforts.
